Apologetics Essentials

These are my favorite apologetics books. Some are essentials you mustn’t go without.

The Catechism of the Council of Trent
I’ll quote the product description directly as it says it all:
“Compiled under the direction of St Charles of Borromeo and recognized as the most authoritative Catholic catechism. Pope Leo XII recommended two books – the Summa and this Catechism – for all seminarians! Pope Benedict XVI, as a Cardinal, called it the most important Catholic Catechism. Originally designed to supply parish priests with an official book of instruction, it has been used extensively by the laity as a steadying guide in our confused age.”
Faith of the Early Fathers: Three-Volume Set
In almost every Protestant conversion story I’ve heard, it was the Early Church Fathers who proved pivotal in their journey. When you show Protestants that the first Christians believed what Catholics believe today, the debate is over.
Radio Replies: Three Volume Set

Typical of some to throw unrelated slanderous arguments at you during a discussion, the tone of this set is excellent for providing short replies. Forward by Bishop Fulton Sheen, organized by topic. Awesome.

Beginning Apologetics Super Set
This is one of the best assemblies of Apologetics information anywhere, in an easy to read format. This set includes the Catholic Verse Finder card. The volume on the Real Presence is excellent. Quotes from Church Fathers as well. Cuts right to the chase and gives you solid grounds for opening a discussion on many topics. Other works may delve deeper later, but the breadth covered here points you in the right direction.

Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism

The book that brought me home to the Church. Every Catholic should have a copy of this book. Purchase extra (used on the cheap if necessary) and give to your friends who don’t have a copy. Always keep an extra copy on you / in your car. You never know the good this book will do for someone. It may be the reason they come back to the Church.

Catholic Controversy: St. Francis De Sales Defense of the Faith
Don’t be fooled by other poor translations, this edition from TAN Book is stellar. The product description pretty much sums everything up:
“After being repeatedly rebuffed in his attempts to re-evangelize Calvinist Protestants who would not listen to Catholic preaching for fear of reprisals, St. Francis resorted to writing leaflets and inserting them into copies of his sermons, then posting them on walls, slipping them under doors and handing them to anyone he could. Four years later almost 72,000 had returned to the ancient Catholic Faith! These tracts have been gathered together and entitled The Catholic Controversy. The works are still as fresh and powerful today and give some of the most cogent arguments against Protestantism ever penned, presenting a defense of the Catholic Faith that in some respects has never been equaled.”

You’ll need a dictionary (or at least dictionary.com) for this one as St. Francis de Sales was a master of literature during the Renaissance, but the arguments herein can be hued by your own local color if need be. :)
